The Circle

(Ebb/Piaf)

You see them on the trains to Paris
But then again, they're everywhere
The girls who wander to the city
To find a dream that isn't there
And every spring, the roses bloom
The awnings drop, the chestnuts fall
And all they have's their little room
With cracking plaster on the wall
So they do up their hair in some tight little curls
And they buy some perfume and some five and ten pearls

Around and around and around in a circle
They move like the earth
The girls of the night
Around and around and around in a circle
At ease with the dark
At odds with the light

A stain on the blouse
A rip in the skirt
"I'm just twenty one"
But who does that hurt?
Let them lie, let them lie
For most of us suffer
And all of us die
And year after year
The circle grows wider

And now and then, they meet their Johnnies
And hope for love that never dies
So turn away if you should notice
The purple bruise below the eyes
They often speak of going home
But who's to care if no one does?
And as they talk, their minds will roam
Recalling time that never was
And they're growing too thin and their vision is faint
So they cover the pale with more powder and paint

Around and around and around in a circle
They move like the earth
The girls of the night
Around and around and around in a circle
At ease with the dark
At odds with the light

A stain on the blouse
A rip in the skirt
"Who, me? Twenty-one."
But who does that hurt?
Let them lie, let them lie
For most of us suffer
And all of us die
And year after year
The circle grows wider

And then they're lying on the sidewalk
The passers-by seem very bored
Nobody even tries to help them
It's precious time they can't afford
Then someone stops to take their wrists
And calls the priest to say the rites
And some old Johnny shakes his fists
And curses God for those he spites
And it's spring once again
And a balmy breeze hums
And the funeral's nice
Only nobody comes

The girls of the night
At ease with the dark
At odds with the light
A pain in the feet
An ache in the breast
They come and they go
Then finally rest
Let them lie, let them lie
For most of us suffer
And all of us die
And year after year
The circle grows wider

La la la la la la, la la la la la la, la la la la la la--
